Hi there, my name is April. I am a first generation Latinx daughter who was born and raised on the west side of Chicago. While studying economics and business in college, I am also a huge advocate for human rights. My goal is to inform those on my thoughts on what goes on in the economic world, but also educate those on how to advocate for marginalized groups, whether through social media sharing or through a simple boycott.
Why do I bother writing about economics and human rights? I was raised by a single mom from Mexico who was learning English and working hard to earn her citizenship. My father had passed away when I was two on New Year’s Day and we were not left with much to thrive, but to afford what we could. We were not wealthy, and our community was not an economically successful area. I had seen it improve economically, but not for the people already living there. We’ve witnessed gentrification and, similar to many, risked losing our homes because we couldn’t afford it. Aside from the economic struggles, I also experienced discrimination, as a Latinx child, a woman, the child of an immigrant, and an advocate. I empathize with those who have experienced discrimination or have had their rights taken away, and I will continue to advocate for marginalized groups.
My goal is to share my advocacy to my readers, and to share my thoughts on today’s economic decisions. This is Advocacy in April.
